STUDENT COUNCILLORS, SEMESTER TWO, 2010

The Student Council candidates have had a busy few weeks preparing their policies, making election posters, campaigning and presenting their speeches to an audience of Year 5-7 students.

Elections were held on August 11 and all nominees were a credit to themselves and to the School.

Congratulations to the following Year 6 and 7 students on being elected as Student Councillors for Semester Two :  Oliver Clare,   Fynlay Howell,   Paige Gale,   Michaela Ward,   Caitlin Becsi, Brodie Patroni, Bradley Townsend and Darian Collins.

These Councillors will work with and be supported by our Head Boy, Lawrence Cunnane, and Head Girl, Claudia Bailey.

Thank you to our outgoing Councillors, Tayla Deters, Kasey Miegel, Shaylee Campbell, Chevall Nicholls, Courtney Cummins, Matt Sheehan, Adam Hankin and Jakob Joyce.  Your support with School Assemblies, our ANZAC Service, fundraising initiatives and leadership duties at Singleton Primary have been greatly appreciated.

Over the past two weeks, students have participated in the Comet Bay School Sports Association’s Cross-Country Carnival and the State Cross- Country Championships.  Congratulations to all who participated and represented the School with such pride and sportsmanship.  For the second year in a row, Singleton took out the CHAMPION SCHOOL SHIELD in the Comet Bay event, and produced a number of individual Champions and Runners-up.  Well done to everyone!

At the State Event, all of the Students performed well and Singleton came 17th as a School, from some 70 participating Schools.  However, one impressive incident involving our Year 5 girls displayed exemplary Sportsmanship.  Unfortunately, they had missed the start of their event, but did not hesitate when offered the opportunity to compete in the Year 6 event.  During this race, a competitor from another School became distressed, so two Singleton girls – Shelby Ward and Madison Kent – abandoned their ambitions in the race, to stay with the girl and assist her until help arrived.  This was true Sportsmanship in action and these two girls are to be Congratulated.

Now our Sporting focus moves to Athletics and our Faction Carnival to be held on Wednesday of Week Ten (Sept 22).  Parents are busily helping their children to prepare for this event.

Warmest Congratulations to Tayla Deters and Kasey Miegel on their selection in the State Under-14 Basketball Team.

CYBER SAFETY:  Management of Student use of communications technology is receiving a lot of Media attention, particularly with the work being done by Psychologists such as Michael Carr-Gregg in the headlines.  It is an issue that has the potential to seriously impact on the lives of adolescents, whose self-image  can be quite fragile during the  upper primary and teenage years.  Every so often  this School experiences an incident where this  technology has been mis-used, and a Student  becomes a victim.  The only means of combating  this is by teachers and parents working with  students on strategies for the appropriate use of  this technology.  One thing Carr-Gregg emphasises is for the need for parents to closely monitor the use of computers and mobile phones in the home.  This can only be supported by saying if you allow your Primary-aged children to use facilities such as Facebook or MSN without close supervision, you are opening Pandora’s Box.  The School Principal is always ready to speak with any parent who has concerns about this, but if you want to adequately equip yourself with all of the relevant information, Google Michael Carr-Gregg.

KINDY-PRE-PRIMARY ENROLMENTS 2011:      Enrolment in these programs closed on July 30.

A large number of Kindy and pre-primary children have already enrolled, so our classes for next year will be based on these numbers.  Any child enrolled after July 30 cut-off, will be placed on a waiting list.
